Self-Esteem Part I

By show of hands, who knows or has heard about Self-Esteem? I can't see you but I figure that's about at least half of you. For the other half you may have heard a little something but haven't worked out what it has to do with you.

What is Self-Esteem? Let's break it down. Esteem is defined as how you feel about someone or something. If I were to use it in a sentence I would say, John held Laura in high esteem. In other words he likes her a lot.

Self-Esteem is how you feel about yourself.

Negative Self-Talk = Negative Self-Esteem

Do you ever hear yourself saying or thinking things like "I suck", "I'll never be any good at this", "Nobody likes me", "My life is crap" or any of a thousand other negative phrases. If so you are having some issues with self-esteem.

Those phrases I just shared are examples of negative self-talk. Usually the things we say about ourselves are reflections of how we are feeling about ourselves at any given moment. If you are saying these things, it stands to reason that you believe they are true.

Newsflash!!!!

You don't suck, you're not worthless or any of those things. You are a precious commodity. You were created to do great and wonderful things. It’s up to you find out what your passion is and what you’ve been put here to do. You have the power to change your life. Things may seem bleak but you have the power within yourself to change your outcome.

Change the way you think

Your mind is the most powerful tool you’ll ever use. Why? Because the mind has the power to change everything about us. Look around, the computer in front of you, the shirt on your back and the shoes on your feet. They all started as thoughts. That is the power of the mind. Anything you can think of, you have the power to achieve. When ever those negative thoughts come up, try to think of something positive to counteract them. This isn’t always easy but it is so worth it. Once you can start to feel good about yourself and understand that you can do anything you put your mind to then the next step is putting your mind to it.

Believe Relentlessly

The first step you take towards achieving or becoming what you want to be is to BELIEVE RELENTLESSLY; no matter what. The people you want to believe in your dreams may shoot them down and never believe, but you NEVER stop believing. The people you care about may never support your dreams. It’s not always because their cruel and evil people. They may just have a lot of fear because of their experiences in life. Be respectful of their position. They are simply trying to keep you from being hurt. They may not know how to express that except with anger or unkind words.

Positive Self-Talk=Positive Self-Esteem

To start to build up your Self-Esteem you have start to change the things you think about or say to yourself. Start to encourage yourself. You may feel a little goofy at first but nobody knows you’re doing it but you. It’ll get easier and pretty soon you’ll start to like it.

Welcome to the Teen Help Site

Hello and Welcome to the Teen Help Site. This site came out of my conversations with my cousins who is navigating through her first year of high school and consulting me about problems she's having. I figured that if she's having these issues, she can't be the only one. So I decided I would share the same advice I give to her with anyone else who might need it.

What's The Goal

The purpose of the site is to offer advice, insight, suggestions, directions and any other information you might be in need of. I'm not going to pull any punches. I invite you to add comments, ask questions, disagree or otherwise get involved.

Rules

Yes I, like most adults do have some rules I'd like to have followed in order to make this a pleasant place.

You are invited to speak your mind but you may not be rude or degrading to anyone else leaving a post. I want everyone who stops in to be comfortable.

Dictionary Widget

There is a dictionary widget feature on the site. You can double click on any word you don't understand and you will have the choice to see the definition or look the word up.

Check in from time to time to see what's new.
